It’s true, there’s a big difference in casinos. Some are fun, some are slum, some are family oriented, some are pretty much adults only. What’s more important, some are comfortable and some are not. If you’re like me, an average bettor, you like the $5.00 tables. Some casino’s will treat you like royalty for your $5.00 bets. Others will act like you scarcely exist. You gotta be comfortable when you gamble. If you’re not, you are going to lose. Remember your goal is to have fun and win some money, not impress any goons that could probably care less about you. When you scout a casino, look at the “action,” see what the bets are that are being placed at the tables. What is the attitude of the employees? What is the attitude of the other patrons? Does the place have a good “feel” about it? Is your $5.00 treated with the same respect as the other guys $100.00? Of course you can’t expect the same comps etc., if you’re a five dollar bettor, but you should get the same respect. Some casinos cater to specific crowds like conference attendees, sports gamblers, high rollers, whatever. They all have different “personalities.” What’s important is that you should enjoy being and gambling there. You also don’t want to be pressured into over-betting. All casinos are different in what they offer as well. If you’re a slot player, look for high return percentages. If you’re a video poker player, you want to look for 9/6 machines (explained in video poker section) and high progressive payoffs. If you’re a blackjack player, you want to look for low number of decks dealt, and percentage advantages. I often get a good deal or package at one casino and spend most of my gambling time at another. You are not obligated to play where you stay. Personally, I prefer to find out where the regulars and the locals go. They are usually in the know about where the best odds, payoffs, dealers, freebies etc., are. I tend to avoid the strips in Las Vegas and Reno and head downtown or out to the edge of town. You generally get less hype and better odds IF you know where to go. This is not a hard and fast rule. One of the best games I ever got into was at Harrah’s Club. You should be aware of casino layout and psychology. Nothing is left to chance in a casino. If you have to use the restroom, you generally must walk quite a ways past all sorts of games and slots before you get there. If you are waiting in line for a show or a buffet, you are probably standing right next to a slot machine. Casino’s are timeless as well. It’s hard to find a clock in most of them. They want you to lose track of time and spend your money. Their goal is to suspend you in Never- Never land and separate you from your money. That’s why they are there. Your goal is to be aware of that and act accordingly. You also need to be aware of your own actions. Drinks are often free while you gamble. Don’t over-do it if you are gambling to win. While in a casino, you don’t have to do anything but use the restroom once in a while. Keno runners will be happy to take your money while you eat. A waitress is almost always available to take your order for something or other at almost all times. You can get almost anything you want without leaving your machine or table. Wear a watch, take plenty of breaks and have a good time. Don’t let the psychology of the casino make you complacent either. Even the terminology is used to make you overbet or overspend. Twenty-five dollar chips are called quarters. Five dollar chips are called nickels. Two quarter bets will cost you fifty hard earned bucks. Never forget that those pieces of plastic represent more than small change to you. How much time does it take you to earn a “quarter?” That kind of thinking will help you keep it all in perspective.
